Intermediate Development Rowing

This program aims to be the "bridge" between recreational and competitive rowing for high school athletes with rowing experience. The coaching staff will challenge and foster the growth in these athletes.  We will build and refine their technical skills, increase overall fitness and mobility, and advance their ambitions in the sport.  

Intermediate Development Spring
Pre-requisites: You must be in grades 8-12.  The athlete must have more than 8 weeks of rowing experience from one or more of the following programs: Fall / Spring Learn to Row and / or Crew League, Summer Skills Development, and / or competitive varsity or novice team experience.  
This is the perfect rowing experience for those athletes who were not selected to our varsity teams or have advanced beyond the parameters of Crew League.  These athletes may wish to have additional training and development with the intention of trying out for the comp teams.  Moreover, the Intermediate program is excellent for those competitive persons who wish to maintain commitments to other extra-curricular activities and want to row at a higher level.

Intermediate Development Summer
The CRI Summer Development team aims to prepare high-school aged athletes (rising freshmen and above) for varsity tryouts and more competitive rowing endeavors.  

The focus of the program is to improve technical foundation, aerobic fitness, strength, stability and flexibility.  Athletes should be comfortable training multiple times per day, which includes the ability to focus in practice and recover properly outside of practice. Sessions will be a mix of land-based fitness and mobility and on-water rowing. At the conclusion of the Summer Development Team the athlete will:

  • Be better prepared for his/her own team’s varsity rowing team tryouts
  • Demonstrate improved performances in technique, fitness, stability, and mobility
  • Articulate greater understanding of rowing concepts and specifics of more effective rowing and athleticism 
  • Recognize & acknowledge his/her greatest strengths and weaknesses

Athletes will get opportunities to demonstrate their skills and improved performance at the end of the program at Providence Sweeps & Sculls on Saturday August 3. 

This program is for high school aged athletes, who have completed at least one season of competitive rowing.  Intermediate and recreational rowers may be allowed in the program, at the discretion of the program Head Coach.

Candidates without competitive team experience, or who are younger than the minimum age described above are encouraged to enroll in CRI’s 2-week Summer Skills camps.

Program Dates:

First practice: Monday June 24

Last practice: Friday August 2

Culminating race, Providence Sweeps & Sculls (Providence, RI): Saturday August 3

Parents/athletes will be responsible for transportation to/from Providence, RI for the regatta. Athletes should expect to return to CRI on Aug 3 after the close of the regatta to unload the trailer.

Summer Program Health Form:

Athletes registered for the Summer Development programs need to fill out the CRI Summer Program Health Form, which is kept confidential and used by our health services staff (or emergency medical personnel) in case of emergency. You can scan and email the form to Nonna Giunta, or bring it to her in the admin office at CRI on the first day.
