Learn To Row
Whether you want to pick up a new sport or are new to sports in general, rowing is a great fit for you. To begin, there are two types: sweep rowing and sculling.
Sweep rowing involves using one oar per rower, which means you’re always rowing as part of a team. Move together as one, glide down the river together, and enjoy all that comes from being in sync on the water.
Sculling involves using two oars per rower which allows for greater independence as you explore connectivity to the water, the boat, and your own movements. Sculling can be in one-person single boats or team boats.
There is no prerequisite for Intro to Rowing or Intro to Sculling, everyone is welcome to learn to row!
Intro to Rowing
Intro to Rowing is our basic introductory sweep class, which will get you on the Charles to teach you sweep rowing basics in no time. It’s perfect for people of all fitness levels and previous athletic experience! Class begins in a stable 12-person “barge” in which you will become familiar with rowing terminology and the fundamentals of technique while learning to row in a fun group environment. Upon successful completion of Intro to Rowing, rowers progress to Novice Sweeps.
Intro to Sculling
Intro to Sculling is an introduction to sculling for those who are new to both sculling and rowing in general. If you have never rowed previously or have most recently participated in Intro to Rowing Sweeps, this is the class for you! In this class, you will learn the basics of the rowing stroke, as well as how to navigate the river, in safe, stable one-person boats (called singles).
